The biggest surprise in F1 Race Stars is the handling. Cars are fast and nimble, but there is no drifting. In keeping with F1, you have to brake and take the racing line to get through corners fastest. It's a huge change for karting games, and one that makes F1 Race Stars stand out. Some corners feature KERS, which builds a boost to let you accelerate our of the corner, but it will still take a while to get used to.

What F1 Race Stars gets right from the start is the general feeling. It is a kart racing game loosely based on the Formula One season, with circuits redesigned to feature loops, jumps and short-cuts. All 12 teams and 24 drivers that started the Formula One season appear as playable characters, along with two additional fictional teams — one, TecNova-Star, with two female drivers, Ruby Power and Jessica Chekker and another, Satsu-Aceler, with male driver Josh Merit and female driver Kira Hoshihara.

There are 11 circuits to choose from by default, each based on one of the 20 rounds of the season, but with modifications to suit the game-play some parts of the Abu Dhabi GP, for example, are based on the adjacent roller coaster Formula Rossa in Ferrari World.
